I wore “Quad blues” and steel-toed boots while working on perfect binders, saddle-stitchers, offline operations, custom web, gravure, sheet-fed and web offset, pre-press operations, and customer service for custom web. 12-hour shifts with machinery, accompanied by a 1.5 hour drive, taught me patience and power of the mind when my body said “I can’t go on any longer.”

I gained respect from seasoned pressmen by coming in each morning with a list of questions to show them I was eager to learn and gain a deeper understanding of the craft they had dedicated their lives to.
~
I asked to sign a contract to have hands-on experience with an offset press. While most co-ops weren’t allowed to change press plates; I got ink on my hands, grease on my face, and changed 64 plates with a T-wrench in one day.
